Lost Innocence

INT. CATHY’S KITCHEN – EVENING
Cathy looks down at the salad she prepares. Two lettuce leaves, half a tomato and two slices of cucumber, one scoop of cooked rice
The food is methodically prepared; she cuts a carrot half into two slices and begins to talk
CATHY
Do you remember the day that we became friends? Do you? I remember it very clearly, that day in the school yard with Jo, Anna and Mel.

FLASHBACK
EXT. HIGH SCHOOL YARD. – DAY
Just before lunch and an 11 year old, Cathy’s trapped against a wall clutching her lunch box
There are three other young girls standing round her while the leader Joanne is talking
JOANNE
Come on Fatty, what have we got for lunch today then?
CATHY
Nooo..
One of the other girls puts their hand on Cathy’s shoulder, pushing her into the wall. Joanne snatches the lunch box, and opens it. The other girls giggle, inside the box is a sandwich, cup cake, chocolate biscuit and piece of fruit
Each of the girls takes an item from the box, giggling still.
JOANNE
There you’ll thank us one day; you can just have the fruit
She shoves the lunch box back at Cathy, who attempts to grasp it but the box drops, the fruit bouncing across the yard
The three girls walk away from her; Cathy bends down and picks up the fruit
END FLASHBACK:

INT. CATHY’S KITCHEN – EVENING
CATHY
Yes, I do remember it really well, how they made me feel, how sad and fat and pathetic I was, and then you came to me and talked to me, and tried to help me, I didn’t want to listen to you at first, but you sort of made sense…
Cathy picks up the plate of food and puts it on a tray; she picks up a glass and fills it with bottled water placing it on the tray
Cathy move’s out of the kitchen and towards a flight of stairs
CATHY
It wasn’t until I got home that you really began to make sense..

FLASHBACK
INT. DINING ROOM. CATHY’S MUM AND DAD’S HOUSE – EVENING
Young Cathy sits down at the dining table, her mum comes into the room with her father and they begin to serve the evening meal. They then both sit down and begin to eat
Cathy pushes the food around her plate, not eating anything
SYLVIA
Something wrong Cathy?
CATHY
I’m not feeling well, can I go lie down mum
SYLVIA
Yes of course, I’ll check on you later ok?
Cathy nods and leaves the room
END FLASHBACK

INT. STAIR CASE – DAY
Cathy walks slowly upstairs
CATHY
I remember how you made me feel at dinner times, how you talked me through it. It was all going to be different from then on, you were my friend, and you were going to help me, protect me through everything, and love me for who I was. You promised me that everything would change now, that you would take away all the pain. I really believed you, you had made me smile, made me feel loved, and cared for
Cathy reaches the top of the stairs, and she looks into the bathroom
INT. BATHROOM – DAY
Cathy enters the bath room and places the tray by the sink. She picks up the plate with the food on
CATHY
The thing is now I don’t feel loved any more, I am in pain all the time, and you are not my friend..
Cathy slides the contents off the plate into the toilet
CATHY
You are my enemy..
Cathy closes the lid and flushes it
CATHY
And you’re killing me..

  1. So this is my short script which was shown in 2005 at the 3345 club.

Hope you like it, and if I could put a video up here I would do, but am not that tech minded. Sorry.

  2. This highlights a sadly common situation and resonates strongly. I would be really interested in seeing the video. Can you pop it on Youtube maybe?

    Robbe

  3. Hi Robbe,

In reply to seeing it Youtube I am sorry but I never had the intention of putting it there, unfortunatly the internet is awash with Pro-anna videos and the likes and I didn’t wan’t my short to be associated with hurting any young girls who would watch it and think badly of themselves.

I would be happy to pass on a dvd. Or if you want to watch it, I can transfer it from personal to public on zhura for the time you wish to view it, and then move it back.

    I hope you understand this.

  4. I thought this was a really strong piece; short and simple, it gives a really strong feeling of what is happening and where this takes place. The ‘person’ Cathy is talking to is kept vague for most of the piece, which is interesting, keeps you hooked.
